Chapter 17
âWhat other bars are available besides Flynnâs in the Falls? I donât like these new customers. Trashy, uptight, and downright frauds. A pity. That was my favorite hangout.â -Maplecrest Falls community post
Jake slammed down his drink and let a few more curse words fly out of his mouth. Ethan grimaced beside him, and Sierra sat quietly on his other side, nursing a ginger ale. It was a little after five when they had finally left the station. Jake had been in such a foul mood that Ethan had suggested going to Flynnâs for a drink. One had turned into two, and now two was number three. Jake knew he had to stop at this one. He was technically still on call for a few more hours, but he didnât give a shit. Chief Long could go fuck himself.
âI donât believe that bastard kicked me off the case,â Jake grumbled bitterly.
âI know,â Ethan said, shaking his head. âI can see his reasoning, but that doesnât mean I have to like it.â
âWell, I think his reasoning is shit,â Jake huffed.
When he had been called into Longâs office, he had been told Sierraâs case was being transferred to Colt because Long had become aware of Jake and Sierraâs relationship. The chief thought Jake was too close to the case, and more importantly, if the bad guy was caught, he didnât want that piece of information thrown around by a defense attorney, trying to get the bastard off. It would be easy to paint Jake as a guy willing to do anything to help his girlfriend.
Of course, he thought it was a bit of a stretch. He did solid work, except for a few times when he moved into gray areas for informationâlike leaving Kane and the Sentinels out of the picture when Sierra was rescued. And hiring a PI to do his dirty work. And letting Hawk do his thing before delivering that Sean guy.
Oh, shit, Jake thought. Iâm going off the deep end. What the hell is wrong with me?
He had never been like this before Sierra. Sure, he utilized the Sentinels from time to time, but they were a sourceânothing more. Now that she was in danger, he was losing his mind. He needed to get his shit together before he lost his job. But on the other hand, heâd do anything to protect her. She had almost died, and there was someone still after her. Hawkâs revelation this afternoon proved that.
So, what did he do now that he was off the case?
âCould he at least have waited for the fucking weekend to be over?â Jake grumbled. âInstead of calling me in on a Saturday afternoon.â
âIâm not even sure why he was there,â Ethan said, shrugging. âHe must have thought it was important enough to change it immediately.â
Or maybe something has him spooked? Jake thought, reflecting on what had happened to Hawkâs employee.
If this kidnapper was contacting people in the community to get his dirty work done, who knew who
